Upgrading RAM Memory On Compaq Notebook
It's really easy to perform a Compaq laptop memory upgrade, and in this article you can read instructions for replacing memory for Compaq laptop as given at the official Compaq website (www1.hp.com/). Upgrading the memory inside the computer helps the Central Processing Unit (CPU) process information faster, and improves system performance. Read all instructions carefully, at least once, before attempting memory installation.
First and foremost, start by finding out exactly what type of RAM memory you will need. Refer to the computer's User's Manual for the type of memory the computer uses and the maximum amount of memory the computer can hold. If the User's Manual is not available, see the Product Specifications document for your model.
Next step is to find out exactly how much memory can be added. In Windows, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Look at the General tab and see the amount of RAM currently installed in the notebook. Subtract the amount of RAM currently in the computer from the maximum amount of memory the computer can hold (which you should know from the previous step). This is the amount of RAM that can be added.
Next step is to find out exactly how much each RAM socket can hold. All you have to do is divide the maximum amount of memory that the computer can hold with the number of memory sockets on the motherboard. So if your notebook has two sockets and a maximum of 2GB of RAM, then obviously you can add 1GB of RAM memory module in each socket. Your next move is to remove the existing memory. Turn off the computer. Unplug all cables, no exceptions. Remove the laptop battery too. From the bottom of the computer, remove the screw holding the RAM cover, and remove the cover. Spread the retention clips on each side of the memory expansion board. Remove the board by pulling it away from the connector at a 45-degree angle. Finally, put the module in an anti-static bag. Now you are ready to add a memory module. Align the keyed (notched) edge of the board with the keyed area in the expansion slot. Insert the board into the slot at a 45-degree angle until it is seated. Push the front edge of the board down until the retention clips snap into place. Replace the cover. Finally, you have to make sure that the upgrade is successful by testing the memory. Turn on the computer. The memory test should briefly run when the computer starts. Check the numbers at the booting screen and see if the match what you expect. If the memory count fails to complete, stops before reaching the total amount of memory, or counts more than once in consecutive restarts, troubleshoot the memory problem or replace the new memory module with another memory module.
