Step-By-Step Guide On Installing Laptop Memory
Installing laptop memory is a relatively easy-to-perform process. This article explains how to install laptop memory. Armed with a screwdriver, calmness and care, you will be able to install laptop ram in about 20 minutes. But the process of installing installing ram in a laptop starts with finding out exactly what type of RAM memory you need.
First of all, you have to check the manual of your laptop and see exactly how much memory can your laptop support. Or in the other words - what's the upgrade potential of your system? Typically laptops have just two RAM slots, so you can only install two RAM memory modules, but the other question, besides the quantity is the type of RAM that you can add. The most popular RAM module types are DDRAM and RDRAM. RDRAM works at higher speeds - 833MHz and 1033MHz, while RDRAM works at lower Hz, but it's cheaper, plus it doesn't make that much difference, but if you are a maniac and want the best, then you should definitely buy a laptop with RDRAM. The thing is that most laptops have RDRAM, but you should check again in the manual, at what speed (MHz) those RAM modules must be.
Installing laptop memory requires a compatible memory module(s), anti-static wrist wrap (if you have one, it's mandatory but it's a good idea to have it), a screwdriver suitable for opening your notebook's cover. The memory compartment of your laptop is located on the underside, but since it also varies from one model to another, you should consult with the official manual. Sometimes you have to install memory on laptop under keyboard.
Using a screwdriver, you should be able to easily open the memory compartment, by removing the cover. Now, once it's open, see if you have an available memory slot so that you can directly plug the module in it. If both slots are taken, then your only option is to replace the existing modules with ones of higher capacity, like replacing two modules of 512MB each with two of 1GB each, if of course, the motherboard of your laptop supports 1GB RAM modules. This is something that's specified in the manual. If not, search the web to find out what's the situation for your particular model. Removing existing laptop memory is done in the following way - release the ejector clips by pulling them out of the slides of the module. Pulling both clips at the same time releases the RAM module. Hold the module by the edges and put in an anti-static bag. Installing laptop memory is done by pulling the ejector clip notches, aligning the module with the slot key and sliding it into the slot. Once the RAM module is in place, the ejector clips should lock back onto it and hold it in place. It's very useful to know how to install ram in a laptop.
